The Writer s Credibility And The Reader s Efficiency
The purpose of substantive editing is to maximize the writerââ¬â¢s credibility and the readerââ¬â¢s efficiency. This stage intends to produce a revised manuscript that improves the readability and understandability of the readers, as well as maintaining the purpose of the text. Editors suggest appropriate changes according to what the writer wants to accomplish and the intended audience ââ¬âwhich determines the content, organization and tone. Thus, the end result of substantive editing is a balance between the writerââ¬â¢s intentions with the readerââ¬â¢s expectations which in turn serves the text reliable, accurate and hopefully, useful. Readers respect authors when there is no faulty or missing information. In order to protect the writerââ¬â¢s credibility, editors consult subject experts to guarantee the content is correct and up-to-date. They keep in mind who the intended audience is (their level of sophistication, their financial status, their sensitivity towar ds the topic) so they can determine what information, which tone, what structure is suitable for them, and still ensure the objectives of the text are explicit. There will be times when writers forget ââ¬Å"necessary details that [is needed to validate] a conclusionâ⬠(Sutcliffe 583). The lack of content can break a readerââ¬â¢s flow: they will not be prepared to follow the upcoming material.
